FAQs
What is a clinical psychologist?
A clinical psychologist is a registered mental health professional trained in assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of psychological issues using evidence-based therapies.
How does a clinical psychologist differ from a general psychologist?
A clinical psychologist has advanced training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of more complex mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorders, depression, trauma, and personality disorders. While both clinical and general psychologists support mental wellbeing, clinical psychologists typically undergo more extensive postgraduate study and supervised practice, and are endorsed by the Psychology Board of Australia to provide specialist clinical care.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No, you don’t need a referral to book a session privately. However, a referral from a GP is required if you wish to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Care Plan.
What can I expect in the first session?
The first session is an opportunity to talk about your concerns, background, and goals. Your psychologist will ask questions to better understand your situation and begin to plan the best way forward.
How long are sessions, and how many will I need?
Sessions typically run for 50 minutes. The number of sessions varies depending on your individual needs — some people come for a few sessions, others for longer-term support. Duration will be addressed during the course of therapy.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes, sessions are confidential. However, there are a few legal and ethical exceptions, such as situations involving risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by court order. These will be explained clearly in your first session. In addition, children and adolescents often have concerns about what information might be shared with parents. This is a complex issue that needs to be addressed on a case-by-case basis and is done during therapy.
Do you offer online/telehealth sessions?
Yes, online sessions are available and are just as effective as in-person sessions for many issues.
What types of issues do you work with?
Common areas include anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, relationship difficulties, neurodevelopmental concerns (such as ADHD and autism), and personal growth.
Do you work with children?
I work with older adolescents (16+) and I am a Cool Kids Accredited Provider for anxiety treatment in young people.
What is the cost, and can I claim a rebate?
Fees are listed on our “Fees” page. If you have a Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare rebates may apply. Some private health funds also offer rebates.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 48 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or missed appointments will incur a fee. Your session time is set aside for you and this fee helps cover the ongoing costs associated with running and maintaining a business.
