THERAPY and ASSESSMENT

Steve Hewitson, Clinical Psychologist

B Psychology (Hons), M Psychology (Clinical)

Steve is a warm and experienced Clinical Psychologist who helps adults and children overcome emotional and behavioural challenges to live more fulfilling lives.

Steve works with adults who feel stuck in painful patterns shaped by early life experiences or trauma. Many of his clients have struggled for years with low mood, anxiety, or relationship difficulties, and some have tried therapy before without the lasting change they were hoping for. Steve uses evidence-based approaches—including Schema Therapy, ACT, and CBT—to help people process their past, build emotional resilience, and reconnect with a more meaningful, satisfying life.

Steve also works with families to support primary school-aged children/adolescents experiencing anxiety or behaviour difficulties. His approach is holistic and practical—helping parents feel more confident in managing challenges, while teaching children/adolescents strategies to better understand and regulate their emotions.

Clients often describe Steve as calm, thoughtful, down-to-earth, and genuinely committed to their growth. He continues to develop his skills through ongoing professional training, with a focus on trauma-informed approaches that support healing at a deeper level.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys playing guitar, going to the gym, and playing baseball.

What to expect

Seeing a psychologist for the first time can feel a little daunting, but it’s a supportive and collaborative process. In your first session, you’ll have the chance to talk about what’s been going on and what you’d like help with. Steve will ask questions to get a clear understanding of your concerns, background, and goals. There’s no pressure to share everything at once — it’s about building a safe and respectful space where you can feel heard. Together, we’ll begin to explore strategies and tools that can support your mental health and wellbeing.

A tailored approach

It’s essential for us to tailor our treatment plan for each individual and to track how each client is doing over time. To do this, we develop a collaborative formulation and treatment plan that outlines what the problems are and what keeps them going. Progress is tracked through feedback-informed treatment, an evidence-based approach to measuring client progress. These methods ensure the best outcomes for our clients.
